Welcome to Moss Squeezes

I had added a microscope to my Amazon wishlist a few years ago and much to my surprise my parents bought it for me for my birthday. This was in November 2017 and after few dabbles with it, I realised that I could buy a digital camera for the eyepiece. I put that on my wishlist and although I planned to buy it in the new year, I received it for Christmas. That's where this adventure really took off.

Apparently moss is teaming with life. In fact it has its own little ecosystem and using a light microscope you can have a look at these microscopic plants and animals. Although I have a biology degree, have taught biology to secondary school level and now train science teachers, I have never spent time just investigating using a microscope.

Learning
I'm very amateur and am learning as I go. I'm learning the microscope functions, how to get good pictures and all about the variety of organisms that live in moss.

Discovering
I enjoy the observing, discovering and recording what is living in each sample of moss. So I am focusing on those skills. However, I am interested to find out what is known about the organisms I find, so am supplementing my discoveries with some attempts at identification and natural history.

Educating
Finally, I am passionate about teacher and child education. I want to share my approaches and discoveries with teachers and parents to encourage children and young people to get into microscopy and biology.

Feel free to join me, follow and comment.
